Most assigned homework is a one-size-fits-all, and in primary school, usually includes a reading task, spelling and some mathematics. High school often brings assignments and completing unfinished classwork for homework. These assignments and classwork can provide effective learning opportunities, especially when connected to the syllabus. I personally have mixed views about homework from several perspectives.

As a mother, I soon found that the avoidance strategies my children developed around homework, were incredibly frustrating to me, yet admirably inventive! As a teacher and academic working with middle school children and adults, the time taken by students to construct interesting excuses, could have been better spent on their assignment, again, admirably inventive! On the other hand, I firmly believe that the benefit attained because of study cannot be underestimated particularly studying mathematics to improve skills and develop fluency with mathematical concepts. When we develop fluency in mathematics, our competence and confidence increase, and we focus less on the processes and more on the application of mathematics, thus developing a deeper understanding.

It is understanding that allows us to improve the transferability of our knowledge onto different and connected areas of mathematics. Logical reasoning and problem solving are two key mathematical tools that are developed from playing and discussing the strategies used to win the games. While I believe in the importance of understanding when learning multiplication facts, there is also room for automatic recall and multiplication tables can be sung in the car on the way to or from school or sport.
